Write On, Mississippi! with Julia Phillips

Writer: MattMatt

There are only two books I’ve read in a single day in my life. The Professor’s House by Willa Cather and Bear by Julia Phillips. If you know me then you know that fact alone makes Julia one of my favorite people on planet earth. I loved this book and I loved becoming friends with Julia on this podcast.

I can’t get enough of authors who make an old story new. Fairytales, myths, children’s stories, Bible stories, historical lives and events. Julia is in a class with Jen Fawkes, Rachel Beanland, Jessie van Eerden, Elizabeth Crook, and James McBride of writers who tell us stories we’ve heard before in a way we haven’t heard them.

Speaking of Jen Fawkes, I have to give her a shout out for her book Tales the Devil Told Me — one of the coolest story collections I’ve ever read. That was one of the gifts I presented to Julia at the beginning of this episode, along with one of my favorite albums of all-time, Pharmakon by the wonderful Minnesota musician, Humbird, who writes songs about Persephone, Eve on a train, and Wolf-Alice and sings them in her beautiful, wintry, Northwoods style.

I hope you enjoy listening to this episode!

I have one more interview from the Mississippi Book Festival with Joseph Earl Thomas dropping on 2/5. Don’t forget to listen to Season 6 episodes from 2023 if you haven’t yet!
